Leonardslee Gardens, Horsham, West Sussex

Built in 1801 with breath-taking views of the English countryside and blooming displays of Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Camellias, Magnolias and Bluebells. A 19th-century Italianate style house is featured on the 200 acre estate, which also includes a series of seven man-made ponds, two alpine glasshouses and an impressive rock garden which was built 1890.

Described as the ‘Finest Woodland Gardens in England’, they were first planted in 1801 and are Grade I Listed. A kaleidoscope of colour sweeps throughout grounds, listing the garden as Grade I in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England. Set in the steep-sided valley; the ponds contain a colony of Carp fish and the combination of parkland, lawn and forest land inhabits a rare colony of wallabies and a number of deer species who wander semi-freely throughout the estate.

Buckler’s Hard & Boat Trip

On the banks of the Beaulieu River, in the heart of the New Forest, you will find the unspoilt haven of Buckler’s Hard which remains untouched by the passage of time.

At the start of the 18th century, Buckler’s Hard was little more than a humble landing place on the Beaulieu River. But the owner of the Beaulieu Estate, John, 2nd Duke of Montagu, had ambitious plans…

The Duke proposed to build a free port named ‘Montagu Town’, which he intended as a hub for the import and export of sugar from the West Indies. Unfortunately his dream was dashed when the French captured the islands.

During the Second World War, Buckler’s Hard became a motor torpedo base and, further downstream, sections of the Mulberry harbours were constructed in the old oyster beds in preparation for the D-Day landings.

Today, Buckler’s Hard is still a ‘living’ village and many of the people who live and work here are engaged in recreation and tourism. Meanwhile, measures are taken to ensure that this remarkable village remains an area of natural beauty for future generations to enjoy.

Cost £35 (non-members £38) per person

Ramsgate Tunnels

Winner Pride in Thanet Tourism Award 'Attraction Employee of the Year' 2016. Ramsgate’s Tunnels Explorer Tours take you underground to unlock the story of a hidden underground city which evolved from the largest and only known Civilian Deep Shelter Air Raid Precaution scheme authorised by Central Government. Tunnel Explorer tours bring to life this most important part of Ramsgate’s history. As the town above was devastated, inhabitants took up residence in the tunnels. In 1940 over 300 families were living permanently in the evolving underground city. Guides will tell the story and bring it to life with residents’ anecdotes as they conduct tours around authentic stage sets in the original tunnels.

In addition to guided tours you’re free to browse in the unique atmosphere of a 150 year old railway tunnel, listen to oral histories, discover more about the tunnels through touch screens or just relax over a cup of coffee at the Ratz Café.

Cost £20 (non-members £23) per person
